The power of practice: Finding peace, strength, and self-love through spiritual practice
Oct 22, 2026In a world filled with uncertainty, division, and constant change, how do we find our way back to ourselves? How do we cultivate peace when life feels overwhelming, stay grounded when everything around us is shifting, and keep our hearts open even when we face challenges?
For nearly four decades, these questions have been at the heart of my life and teachings. And time and again, I’ve returned to one simple yet profound truth: the power of practice.
Our spiritual practices can become a sanctuary. A place where we reconnect with ourselves, nourish our bodies, steady our minds, and open our hearts. They offer us something to return to, even when life feels unpredictable.
As we move through the changing seasons of life, our practices can help us cultivate greater peace, strength, and love, not by making life's challenges disappear, but by changing the way we meet them.
Creating a Sanctuary Within
There are seasons in life when we feel deeply connected to ourselves, when our days flow naturally and we feel grounded in who we are. And then there are seasons when we feel disconnected, overwhelmed, or uncertain about what comes next.
During these times, a spiritual practice can be an anchor.
Whether it’s a few conscious breaths in the morning, a gentle yoga practice, a moment of meditation, or a prayer whispered before bed, these small rituals create space for us to pause and listen.
They invite us to step away from the noise of the outside world and reconnect with the wisdom within.
Following the sacred nine days of Navratri, a celebration of the Divine Feminine, I’ve been reflecting on how beautiful it is to recommit to ourselves and the practices that nourish our hearts and souls.
The changing seasons of life are an invitation to slow down, turn inward, and remember what truly matters. Just as the roots of a tree provide stability through changing weather, our spiritual practices help us remain grounded through life's inevitable transitions.
The beauty is that we don't need hours of free time or a perfectly structured routine. We simply need to begin, showing up for ourselves one breath, one moment, one practice at a time.
How spiritual practice helped me through grief
I originally created my seven-week course, The Power of Practice, after experiencing the devastating loss of my son.
It was one of the darkest chapters of my life, a time when I needed every bit of support I could find.
My daily practices of yoga, breathwork, meditation, mantra, and prayer became my lifeline. They helped me find my breath when everything felt overwhelming, reconnect with my body when I felt disconnected from myself, and slowly rediscover moments of peace, gratitude, and even joy.
These practices didn't erase my grief. They gave me a way to move through it.
They reminded me that even in the midst of profound pain, there could still be moments of connection, beauty, and love.
This experience deepened my understanding of how essential spiritual practice can be, not as another item on our to-do list, but as a way of caring for ourselves at the deepest level.
Because life brings challenges to all of us. We may be navigating grief, heartbreak, parenting, relationship difficulties, financial uncertainty, or simply the everyday stresses of being human.
Having practices we can turn to during these moments can make a profound difference. They help us create space between what happens to us and how we respond. They remind us that we can return to ourselves, even when we don't have all the answers.
And sometimes, that is enough to help us take the next step.
The ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and living in rhythm with nature
Recently, I was reminded of the importance of these practices during a Panchakarma retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Immersing myself in the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda was a beautiful opportunity to reconnect with the rhythms of nature and reflect on how we can bring greater harmony into our everyday lives.
Ayurveda teaches us to pay attention to our individual needs and the natural cycles that shape our lives. It invites us to consider how we eat, rest, move, and care for ourselves in ways that support our overall well-being.
Just as nature moves through cycles of activity and rest, growth and renewal, we also need different things at different times.
Yet it's easy to lose touch with these natural rhythms when we're constantly rushing, responding to external demands, and looking for answers outside ourselves.
Simple practices can help us return to a more intentional way of living. A nourishing morning ritual, mindful movement, conscious breathing, or a few quiet moments before bed can become opportunities to listen to our bodies and honor what we need.
This wisdom is woven into The Power of Practice, alongside yoga, meditation, breathwork, mantra, prayer, and holistic self-care.
The intention is not to create another set of rules to follow. It's to discover what genuinely supports you and build a personal practice that feels nourishing, sustainable, and meaningful.
Exploring the Devotional Path of Tantra
I'm also delighted to share that I've recently added a beautiful new Devotional Tantra component to The Power of Practice, including new teachings and guided audio practices.
For those who have been curious about Tantra and the devotional path I teach, this is a wonderful opportunity to explore this tradition in an accessible and meaningful way.
Devotional practice invites us to approach our spiritual lives with reverence, presence, and an open heart. It offers a way to deepen our relationship with ourselves and the sacred, bringing intention and awareness into the moments that make up our everyday lives.
Rather than treating spirituality as something separate from the rest of our existence, devotional practice invites us to discover how our daily actions, rituals, and relationships can become expressions of connection.
Through guided practices and teachings, we can create space to listen more deeply, cultivate self-love, and bring greater awareness to the way we move through the world.
Whether you're completely new to yoga and spiritual practice or have been on this path for many years, there is always room to explore, learn, and deepen your connection with yourself.
And whatever your spiritual tradition, you can approach these practices in a way that feels authentic to you.

Learning to surrender and embrace life
As I write this, I was supposed to be in Brazil for a surf retreat. But a last-minute visa surprise changed everything, and I found myself on a spontaneous adventure to Providencia, a beautiful, little-known island off the coast of Colombia.
Sometimes life has other plans.
It's not always easy when things don't unfold the way we imagined. We make plans, set expectations, and picture how things are supposed to look. Then life reminds us that we can't control everything.
Surfing has become one of my favorite practices of presence, surrender, and trust. Out in the ocean, I can't control the waves, the wind, or the changing conditions. I can only learn to meet what arrives, stay present, and respond as best I can.
In many ways, this is a spiritual practice in itself.
The same principles apply to our everyday lives. We can cultivate the ability to remain grounded when things change, to let go when necessary, and to find moments of joy even when our plans take an unexpected turn.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is go with the flow, play, explore, and celebrate this precious life.
We don't need to have everything figured out to experience peace. We can learn to meet life as it unfolds, with a little more trust, openness, and compassion for ourselves.
Remember your own light
As we move through the changing seasons of life, my wish for you is simple.
May you remember your own light.
May you nurture it, protect it, and allow it to shine.
May you create space for the practices that bring you home to yourself, especially when life feels uncertain or overwhelming.
And may you remember that your spiritual journey doesn't need to look like anyone else's. It simply needs to be yours.
Your practice can be a place where you return to yourself again and again, a reminder of the strength, wisdom, and love that are already within you.
Because when you learn to meet yourself with love, that love naturally begins to ripple outward into your relationships, your community, and the world around you.
When you love yourself, you love the world.
With love and devotion,
Monica
